Tyler Freeman faces a make-or-break season in 2024 -- his final option year. After debuting in 2022, he was called up in mid-April last season only to hurt his shoulder in his first game with the big club. He would end up missing time in the second half with soreness in the other shoulder. Around the IL stint, Freeman struggled to a .594 OPS in the second half. While he's shown decent bat-to-ball skills in the big leagues, the extra-base power has been lacking (.339 SLG). His baserunning is a positive, and his potential should at least keep him on fantasy watch lists. Once a well-regarded prospect, Freeman has essentially performed at a replacement level in 88 career games to date, according to FanGraphs' WAR. He's trying to make the roster this spring as a utility option for the Guardians.

  • Guardians' Tyler Freeman: Records steal in win

    Freeman went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two hit-by-pitches, a stolen base and one run scored in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Rangers. That's a hard way to get on base four times, but it worked well to set the table for the Guardians. Freeman is still not hitting all that well -- he's batting .167 over 12 games in May, dropping his season average to .193 through 37 contests. He's made up for it with a passable .307 on-base percentage and 9.2 percent walk rate. The 24-year-old has added five steals, four home runs, 13 RBI, 21 runs scored and six doubles through 141 plate appearances. Manager Stephen Vogt is still trying to figure out who will fit best at leadoff while Steven Kwan (hamstring) is out, and Freeman is in the mix, having hit atop the order in each of the last three games.

Freeman hasn't been able to turn his hitting around in May -- he's gone 4-for-26 (.154) through nine games this month and is batting just .193 on the year. His homer Friday was his first since April 19, and only two of his hits in May have gone for extra bases. The 24-year-old has four homers, 13 RBI, 18 runs scored and four steals through 126 plate appearances. It's fair to question whether Freeman has earned his near-everyday role, but the Guardians are unlikely to shake things up too dramatically while Steven Kwan (hamstring) is out.

Freeman opened May 1-for-12 across four contests, and his last multi-hit effort before Monday was April 19.
