Player Outlook
Despite hopes for a breakout in 2023, Tyler Nevin was never really able to get things going. He ended up appearing in 41 games for the Tigers, slashing just .200/.306/.316 with two home runs and 10 RBI. The 26-year-old was much more impactful for Triple-A Toledo, as he slashed .326/.400/.543 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI across 87 games. Nevin may be the prototypical Quadruple-A player at this point, though he could get another chance to impress in 2024 for a Detroit team still searching for consistent offensive performers. Matt Vierling seems likely to start the year at third base, and Zach McKinstry and Colt Keith are also in the mix, though none of those players are established options at this point. That leaves a small window for Nevin if he's able to impress during spring training or during the year in the minors. For now, fantasy managers should probably leave him off the radar until the playing time picture comes into focus for Detroit.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Absent from lineup

Nevin is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Houston. Nevin's production has cratered in May (3-for-39) and with that his playing time has also slipped. He's now started just half of the Athletics' last 10 games, and the last time he was in the lineup versus a right-hander he was down in the No. 8 spot.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Sitting against righty again

Nevin is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros. Nevin is on the bench for the fourth time in seven games, with each of those absences coming against right-handed pitching. With both Brett Harris and Tyler Soderstrom having settled into everyday roles at the corner-infield spots, the right-handed-hitting Nevin looks like he'll be limited to short-side platoon duties for the time being.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Sitting Friday

Nevin is not in the starting lineup for Friday's matchup with the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Nevin will take a seat for a second game in a row Friday as he's currently going through a 0-for-20 dry spell at the plate. Lawrence Butler will draw the start in right field and bat eighth against Seattle.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Resting during Game 2

Nevin isn't in the Athletics' lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Rangers. Nevin went 0-for-4 with a strikeout during Game 1, and he'll step out of the lineup for the nightcap. His absence will move Brent Rooker into right field while Shea Langeliers serves as Oakland's DH, allowing Kyle McCann to start behind the plate.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Taking seat Tuesday

Nevin is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers. Nevin started the previous 14 games and posted an .858 OPS during that stretch, though he's now in the midst of an 0-for-14 slump. Brett Harris is starting at third base Tuesday for the fifth straight game, which has resulted in Nevin seeing more action in right field.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Hot streak continues

Nevin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Pirates. The 26-year-old took Quinn Priester deep in the third inning, extending an impressive stretch that has seen Nevin record four straight multi-hit performances as part of a nine-game hitting streak. He's left the yard four times during the heater, accounting for all of his homers on the season, and since joining Oakland at the beginning of April he's slashed .325/.375/.500 in 88 plate appearances with 10 runs and 10 RBI. Nevin posted consistently solid numbers in the minors but never got much of an opportunity in Baltimore, and he stumbled with Detroit in 2023. If this is his last chance to establish himself as a big-league player, he seems to be making the most of it.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Leaves yard in win

Nevin went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run in a win over the Orioles on Sunday. Nevin proved key to the Athletics' late-game rally with his seventh-inning solo shot, inching Oakland to within a run at the time. It was Nevin's second time leaving the yard in his last four games, and he extended his hitting streak to six games in the process. The 26-year-old has served as one of the most reliable bats in a highly inconsistent A's offense, now sporting a .286/.342/.400 slash line through 76 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Swats first homer

Nevin went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Thursday in a 3-1 victory versus the Yankees. Nevin's two-run blast off Nestor Cortes in the third inning proved to be the game-winning hit, as neither team crossed the plate after that point. The long ball was his first this season and just his sixth through 375 big-league plate appearances. Nevin hasn't flashed much power thus far and has never stolen a base as a major leaguer, but he's at least put together a decent .286/.355/.375 slash line this season.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Stands out in Wednesday's win

Nevin went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and a run in a win over the Cardinals on Wednesday. Nevin drew the start in right field and delivered once again, pushing his average to .303 across 37 plate appearances. Nevin has now reached safely in five consecutive games, but Wednesday's two-bagger was his first extra-base hit of the campaign.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Gaining traction in lineup

Nevin will start in right field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Nevin will open a game in right field for the first time all season while the lefty-hitting Lawrence Butler rests with southpaw Steven Matz on the hill for St. Louis. Though Nevin's playing time in the outfield will likely be limited to when the Athletics face lefties, he should be in store for at least a semi-regular spot in the starting nine versus right-handers after Oakland recently placed third baseman/designated hitter J.D. Davis (adductor) and outfielder/designated hitter Brent Rooker (ribs) on the injured list.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Delivers as in-game replacement

Nevin entered Sunday's win over the Nationals in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement for J.D. Davis (groin) and went 2-for-2 with an RBI single. Nevin made good use of his pair of plate appearances and ignited the Athletics' six-run sixth-inning rally with a single that plated Abraham Toro. Nevin has now reached safely in four of his last five games and could be set for some starts at third base in coming days if Davis' injury lingers.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Delivers first multi-hit effort

Nevin went 2-for-4 with an RBI single in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday. Nevin drew the start in left field before eventually seeing time at first base, and he opened the scoring with a first-inning knock that plated Abraham Toro. The 26-year-old Nevin had come into Wednesday in a brief 1-for-9 season-opening funk, but he's seen semi-regular playing time of late with four starts in the Athletics' last six games.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Not starting Saturday

Nevin is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Tigers. Nevin has started in left field in Oakland's last two games, going 1-for-4 with one walk over that span. He'll retreat to the bench against Tigers right-hander Kenta Maeda on Saturday, with Seth Brown drawing the start at left field.

  • Athletics' Tyler Nevin: Claimed by Oakland

The Athletics claimed Nevin off waivers Sunday. Nevin was designated for assignment by Baltimore after missing the Opening Day roster and will now receive an opportunity in Oakland. The 26-year-old spent last season with the Tigers and posted a .200/.306/.316 slash line in 41 games. Nevin has no minor-league options remaining and will join the Athletics' 26-man active roster.

  • Orioles' Tyler Nevin: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Orioles designated Nevin for assignment Thursday. After a strong showing in the Grapefruit League, Nevin looked in good position to make the Opening Day roster as a bench bat, but he'll instead miss out on a spot with Baltimore making the late-camp pickup of infielder/outfielder Tony Kemp. If Nevin isn't claimed off waivers, he'll likely remain in the Orioles organization and report to Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Tyler Nevin: Likely for roster spot

Nevin is expected to win the Orioles' last bench spot on the Opening Day roster, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Nothing is official yet, but Ryan McKenna and Nick Maton were informed they missed out on roster spots Sunday, paving the path for Nevin to be a utility bat off the bench. Nevin hit .333 with two home runs, seven RBI and a 2:11 BB:K over 23 games in Grapefruit League play. He has no easy path to playing time, barring any external additions -- third base would appear to be the position most up for grabs to begin the season.

  • Orioles' Tyler Nevin: Dealt to Baltimore

The Tigers traded Nevin to the Orioles in exchange for cash considerations Monday. Nevin will return to Baltimore after appearing in 58 games for the Orioles during the 2022 campaign. He slashed .200/.306/.316 with two homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored over 41 contests a year ago with Detroit and figures to serve as organizational depth heading into the 2024 season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Nevin: Recalled from Triple-A

The Tigers recalled Nevin from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Nevin is slashing .326/.400/.543 with 58 RBI across 385 plate appearances in Triple-A this season, but his success has yet to translate into the majors. He'll come up from the minors to replace Riley Greene (elbow), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday.

  • Tigers' Tyler Nevin: Optioned to Toledo

Detroit optioned Nevin to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Nevin, 26, has posted an ugly .122/.214/.184 batting line in 22 games this season at the major-league level. Akil Baddoo (quad) is expected to return from the injured list Friday to fill the vacant 26-man roster spot.

  • Tigers' Tyler Nevin: Sent to Toledo

The Tigers optioned Nevin to Triple-A Toledo on Friday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. The move comes as a result of Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) returning from the 10-day injured list. Nevin was recalled from Triple-A on May 30 and went just 3-for-17 (.176) at the plate after being promoted. The 26-year-old infielder holds a .331/.387/.477 slash line in the minors this season and could return to Detroit later this summer.
