Player Outlook
Are the years of heavy volume behind the plate finally catching up with J.T. Realmuto? He has been an above-average offensive producer for seasons on end and still finished 2023 as the third-most valuable fantasy catcher behind only William Contreras and Adley Rutschman because unlike any other catcher, he steals bases. His 16 steals last season led all players who are still catcher eligible for 2024. However, Realmuto had both a career-worst batting average and the second-worst OBP of his career last season. Realmuto was once a high-contact hitter, but he's since slipped to the bottom half of the league while his chase rate has slipped near the bottom third. Kyle Schwarber's full-time presence on the roster at designated hitter doesn't afford Realmuto the ability to stick in the lineup when he gets days off behind the plate, but if healthy, Realmuto should still play around 130-to-140 games once again while offering production in all five categories.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Undergoing meniscus surgery

The Phillies placed Realmuto on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right knee pain, and he's scheduled to undergo a meniscectomy Wednesday. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Realmuto has been playing through the injury for nearly a month, and the Phillies elected to address the injury now rather than attempting to wait things out. Gelb also reports that Realmuto will miss roughly a month, potentially setting him up for a mid-July return from the shelf. Rafael Marchan was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move and should serve as the backup catcher to Garrett Stubbs.

Realmuto (knee) will start at catcher and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Mets. Realmuto will re-enter the starting nine after sitting out each of the past three games while managing a sore right knee. Provided he doesn't experience any setbacks in his return to action, Realmuto should resume handling one of the heftier workloads in the league among No. 1 catchers, though it wouldn't be surprising if the Phillies gave him a breather later this week or had him serve as a designated hitter for a game.
