Sanchez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. Sanchez had started at designated hitter or catcher in four of the Brewers' previous five games, but he'll hit the bench for the series opener in Philadelphia. The 31-year-old should still have a fairly clear path to a regular spot in the lineup versus left-handed pitching, but opportunities to start against righties could be harder to come by following Rhys Hoskins' recent return from the injured list.... Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Playing time trending up
Sanchez will start at catcher and will bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Red Sox. He'll be included in the lineup for the fifth time in six games, with three of those starts coming versus left-handed pitching and two coming versus righties. Though William Contreras remains the Brewers' clear top backstop, look for Milwaukee to continue to find room in the lineup for both Contreras and Sanchez between catcher and DH while the latter is continuing to excel at the plate. Over 103 plate appearances on the season, Sanchez is hitting .228 with nine extra-base hits (six home runs, three doubles).... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Raps out two hits in loss
Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Marlins. Sanchez has seen a surge in playing time of late, though he's been aided by the Brewers facing three consecutive left-handed starting pitchers. At the very least, Sanchez seems to have carved out a short-side platoon role, with he and top backstop William Contreras starting at either catcher or designated hitter when the Brewers face a southpaw. After Wednesday's two-hit effort, Sanchez is now holding down a .764 OPS over 99 plate appearances on the season, making him one of the more productive No. 2 catchers in baseball.... See More ... Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Homers vs. Pittsburgh
Sanchez went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's 10-2 win over the Pirates. Sanchez extended Milwaukee's lead to 10-2 in the third inning with a two-run blast off Martin Perez, his sixth long ball of the year. The 31-year-old Sanchez has gotten steady playing time against left-handed pitching, either spelling William Contreras behind the plate or at DH. Sanchez has swung the bat well recently, going 8-for-26 with three homers and a 1.033 OPS over his last eight games. Overall, he's slashing .243/.317/.527 with 13 RBI and 11 runs scored through 82 plate appearances this season.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Goes yard again
Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Wednesday's 6-4 loss to Kansas City. Sanchez notched his second home run of the series Wednesday, tagging Nick Anderson for a solo homer in the seventh inning. The 31-year-old has slowly been climbing out of his early season slump, collecting eight hits in his last 23 at-bats, with four home runs during that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Checks in behind plate Monday
Sanchez (hamstring) will start at catcher and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Royals. Sanchez will make a start for the first time since exiting last Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Rays with right hamstring tightness, but he had been available off the bench for the last few days and served as a late-inning defensive replacement at first base in Friday's 3-1 win over the Cubs. He'll be back behind the dish Monday while No. 1 catcher William Contreras gets a day off from catching and serves as the Brewers' designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Available off bench
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Friday that Sanchez (hamstring) is not yet 100 percent but is "good to go" and will be available off the bench, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Eric Haase is on the Brewers' taxi squad just in case, but it doesn't appear at this point that the team plans to add him to the active roster. Sanchez had to be removed from Tuesday's game against the Rays with right hamstring tightness, but it sounds like he could pinch hit Friday, if needed.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Exits with injury
Sanchez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rays with right hamstring tightness. Sanchez was grabbing at his hamstring after beating a throw to first base during the first inning, and he was quickly taken out of the game by a trainer. The severity of his injury isn't immediately apparent, but the Brewers will take a closer look at him in the clubhouse and should provide more information relatively soon.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Retreats to bench Monday
Sanchez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. Sanchez went 3-for-10 with a pair of doubles, a walk, two runs and an RBI while making starts in each of the last three games, with two coming as a designated hitter and one coming at catcher. The Brewers haven't yet shown a willingness to deploy Sanchez at DH on a consistent basis, so he seems likely to remain in a part-time role while top backstop William Contreras is healthy.... Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Homers Tuesday
Sanchez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Pirates. Sanchez was responsible for the Brewers' lone run Tuesday with a 432-foot blast off Bailey Falter to lead off the eighth inning. It's the second long ball of the year for Sanchez -- the 31-year-old backstop has primarily served as a bench option in the early going, backing up William Contreras with Rhys Hoskins serving as Milwaukee's primary DH. Sanchez is slashing just .167/.211/.361 with three RBI and two runs scored through his first 38 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Sitting out third straight
Sanchez is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Twins. Sanchez started at designated hitter against a left-hander on Opening Day, but he's now been on the bench for each of the next three games versus righties. It's not a good sign for fantasy managers who rostered him as a second catcher. Rhys Hoskins is at DH on Tuesday, with Jake Bauers handling first base.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Not starting Saturday
Sanchez isn't in the Brewers' lineup Saturday against the Mets. Sanchez started as the Brewers' DH on Friday, but he will take a seat after going 0-for-2 in the first game of the year. Rhys Hoskins will serve as the designated hitter instead, allowing Jake Bauers to pick up a start at first base against right-hander Luis Severino.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Making Cactus debut
Sanchez (hand) is in the lineup for Milwaukee's Cactus League game against Seattle on Saturday. Sanchez has spent the first portion of spring training recovering from a right hand injury he suffered during the offseason. He logged three hits over six at-bats while hitting on the back fields Wednesday and will make his spring debut as the Brewers' designated hitter -- a role Sanchez is expected to fill often in the regular season.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Ahead of schedule
Sanchez (hand) took six at-bats on the back fields Wednesday and could make his Cactus League debut before his initial March 14 estimate, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Working his way back from a right hand injury, Sanchez had a home run, a double and a single in those six at-bats and felt good, with Brewers manager Pat Murphy saying the catcher could play "very soon." The 31-year-old will back up William Contreras at catcher and is also expected to receive ample playing time at designated hitter for Milwaukee this season.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Targeting March 14 Cactus debut
Sanchez (hand) could make his Cactus League debut March 14 against the Mariners, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. It's not clear whether the plan is to have him catch or serve as a designated hitter initially, but it will give Sanchez just under two weeks' worth of games to get ready for Opening Day. The 31-year-old has been eased into things this spring after injuring his hand in an offseason workout. Sanchez is projected to serve as Milwaukee's DH and backup catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Taking BP on Wednesday
Sanchez (hand) will take batting practice Wednesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Sanchez will be getting in his first BP of the spring, as he's slightly behind the Brewers' other position players in camp due to the right hand issue he suffered in an offseason workout. The 31-year-old -- who previously fractured the hand in September -- caught a live batting practice session Tuesday. At this stage, his ability to swing the bat comfortably may be of greater concern than his ability to play defense.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Not ready for games yet
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Thursday that Sanchez (wrist) has been cleared for baseball activities but will need time to ramp up before playing in games, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. Sanchez's signing with the Brewers was delayed about two weeks due to concerns about his right wrist -- which he fractured in September -- that cropped up during his physical. He ultimately had the guaranteed money in his contract reduced from $7 million to $3 million once the deal was finalized. However, the injury isn't severe enough to prevent Sanchez from working out, and it shouldn't be too long before he's cleared for Cactus League action. The 31-year-old is projected to back up William Contreras at catcher and could also see a significant number of starts at designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Finalizes deal with Milwaukee
Sanchez finalized a one-year contract with the Brewers on Wednesday, with the deal guaranteeing him $3 million rather than the initial $7 million that the two sides had agreed upon two weeks earlier, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The deal will feature incentives that will allow Sanchez to get back to the $7 million figure, provided he stays healthy after the Brewers had some concerns about his right wrist following a physical. The deal also contains a mutual option for 2025, according to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Sanchez batted .218/.292/.500 with 19 homers over just 260 plate appearances last season with the Padres. He's slated to see ample time at designated hitter while also backing up William Contreras at catcher.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Close to finalizing deal
Sanchez hasn't officially signed a one-year deal with the Brewers, but the two sides are close to finalizing a contract as of Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Jon Heyman of the New York Post was first to report Feb. 7 that Sanchez had reached an agreement with the Brewers, but the deal has been put on hold temporarily after Milwaukee expressed concern about Sanchez's right wrist following a physical. It's possible that Sanchez's wrist issues will result in him signing for less than the $7 million salary that was originally reported, but he may still be able to reach that figure via incentives. The 31-year-old catcher is expected to see significant time at designated hitter in 2024 while serving as top backstop William Contreras' backup.... See More ... See Less -
Brewers' Gary Sanchez: Not in Brewers camp
Sanchez did not report to Brewers camp Wednesday with the rest of the team's pitchers and catchers, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. He has still not arrived as of Friday and there's no word on when or if his reported one-year, $7 million contract will be finalized. Rosiak speculated Wednesday that negotiations might still be ongoing. Assuming the deal does eventually become official, Sanchez is expected to see plenty of action at designated hitter as well as backing up William Contreras at catcher.... See More ... See Less
